Since Johnny Campbell led the first cheers at a Minnesota University football game on November 2, 1898, cheerleading has been primarily a support group that leads group cheers and chants at sports events. Cheerleading serves as an outlet for children and young adults who identify with the excitement of the activity. This is an activity that must be developed with careful attention to safety factors.
The single most important thing is promoting safety- whether this is in game situations or stunting. GLVA cheer’s goal is to increase the cheerleader’s awareness in regard to their external environment: educating the team on when, where and how they fit into the game’s activities.
Cheerleaders cannot be expected to learn and practice skills on their own. GLVA will be focusing on the fundamentals of cheerleading such as arm placements, cheerleading motions, synchronization, sharpness, basic cheers/chants, basic age appropriate stunts, the understanding of offense and defense, jumps and being “game day ready”. With this cheer program, our coaching staff’s direct involvement will play a large role on the personal growth and development of participants.
